2009 EVENT PROGRAM DETAILS

The 2009 Texas Wireless Summit taking place in Austin, Texas on November 4, 2009 today announced this year's theme. The relentless expansion of wireless data networks is allowing new industries to adopt wireless technology as a foundation for future growth. These industries will deploy new data-driven solutions in smart grid, healthcare, telematics, consumer electronics, and software applications, resulting in unforeseen innovations.

Topics:

  • Which wireless technology for what applications?
    • There are numerous existing and emerging wireless technologies that have the promise to be used in a rapidly increasing number of applications, but which technologies make the most sense for which applications? For example, should smart meters use LTE, Wimax, 3G, Zigbee, Wi-Fi, or other unlicensed approaches such as "white space"? Should consumer appliances use Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 60 Ghz, or UWB?
  • Security
    • How can wireless data be pervasive and yet not compromise security and privacy? As utilities, healthcare providers, automotive, and insurance companies gain direct feeds into our homes, cars, and personal lives, how will the communications and information remain secure? The choice of security approach has implications on bandwidth, hardware, power consumption, and overall network performance.
  • Infrastructure deployment and management
    • Individuals and business will need to manage devices attached to the networks inside their homes, offices, cars and city-wide. How will those devices be activiated, de-activated, authenticated, remotely managed, remotely accessed, and interact with other devices? How will the enabling infrastructure be implemented? The implications of device and application management are echoes of the "open networks" debate in the traditional cellular industry.

Open Operating Systems

The fragmented operating system landscape in the mobile phone industry has been a barrier for developers in getting their applications to market. Current efforts to consolidate the industry around a small number of operating systems with an "Internet heritage" promises to lower the barriers for developers and reduce support costs. How will this consolidation occur? Which operating systems will win? And will developers from the Internet flock to these environments?
